On 22nd of March 2022, after a three-year break, forced by Covid-19 pandemic, we could finally meet in person again and enjoy the celebration of the European trees together.
The Ceremony started with awarding the winners of ETY2020 and ETY2021. We were happy that some of the nominators, the local communities itself, could participate and receive the price from our hands. It is the most rewarding moment, when people from those distant places arrive to the Ceremony showing, how important the tree is for their community. We really appreciate this!

Russia loses participation in European Tree of the Year due to invasion of Ukraine

28.2.2022 | By Josef Jarý
We, organizers of the ETY are appalled by the aggression of the Russian Federation, which has militarily invaded neighbouring Ukraine.

We therefore join the activities aimed at the international isolation of Russia.

With immediate effect, we are putting the Russian Federation out of the running for the international European Tree of the Year contest.

This move is not directed against ordinary Russian women and men. We appreciate all active citizens of the Russian Federation who strive for a free civil society and the protection of nature. However, we cannot stand idly by and watch the unprecedented aggression of the Russian leadership against a neighbouring country. The exclusion of Russia from the competition is a step that must be understood in the context of international efforts to isolate Russia in order to stop the war.

The importance of being “tree-professionals”

02.02.2022 | By Josef Jarý

The trees that are participating in our contest are usually of a greater age, sometimes standing in the middle of our cities, in our precious parks. Their living conditions might have changed significantly during their lifetimes. Being planted at outskirts of the cities hundreds of years ago, now facing the impacts of new buildings and roads constructions, sometimes their living space has become so limited that it starts to cause problems and our “green friends” begin to suffer.

If you have any queries about donating to the European Tree of the Year then please email us to

1. Can I ensure my money goes to a specific tree?

No. Your gift to the European Tree of the Year will help to take better care of trees and landscapes in our neighbourhoods, in Europe. With your support we can empower the local communities and organizations to care for trees all over Europe. Part of your donations will specifically help care for and maintain the winning tree and its surrounding.

2. How much should I give?

The amount is up to you. You can decide to donate 3, 5, 10, 20, 50 EUR or more, monthly or one-off. For 25.000 EUR a year we can organise a contest which empowers organisations in 15+ European countries to run a national campaign on tree care and tree protection. Over the course of 50 years, a single tree can generate 28.250 EUR worth of oxygen, provide 56.000 EUR worth of air pollution control, recycle 33.500 EUR worth of water, and control 38.500 EUR worth of soil erosion. The investment to better care of trees pays back to everyone.

3. Why do we prefer people to make regular gifts rather than one-off donations?

Long-term donations are more cost effective. They enable us to plan for the future and ensure money is available where it is needed most. Regular gifts mean a consistent, predictable income so we can plan and budget better and, therefore, be more efficient. They give us the security and confidence to react to situations as they arise and the income to carry on with our work. More of your money goes to our work as they generate less administration and carry cheaper bank charges. There are also benefits for you - the donor. You can spread your donations over a period of time, so you pay less each month. A regular gift also provides you with the reassurance that you are actively helping to improve the care and the attention to trees.

4. Can I set up a Continuous Payment Authority online?

Yes, you can set up a regular gift for the amount of your choice. The amount you set is going to be withdrawn monthly from your card automatically until you cancel the subscription in the special form. For subscriptions with monthly payment, payment for the following month will be drawn on the same day of the month as the first payment.

5. Changing of payment card

If you wish to change the payment card, please send an e-mail to We will then delete your card data. Once your card data has been deleted, we will send you a confirmation.

6. Is making a credit card donation online secure?

Making an online donation on our website is completely safe. When you make a donation your web browser connects to a specially set-up secure server. Any personal information you enter onto our online donation pages is 'encrypted' before being sent to our card payment processor, SecurionPay. SecurionPay stores your information in a carefully controlled environment using industry standard practices. 7. Privacy policy

Environmental Partnership Association (EPA) – the organiser of the European Tree of the Year – collects personally identifiable information, such as your email address and name.
