Oak: 250 years, Pine: 130 years
Region:
Canicosa de la Sierra, Castilla and León, Spain
This unusual model of coexistence is located in an old wooded pasture surrounded by oaks, and facing north towards the village of Canicosa. A pine seed left in the hole of an oak germinated and a small pine started to grow trying to find the light and soil. The pine, stronger and younger than the old oak, increases and accelerates the oak´s decrepitude. This ephemeral whim of nature is a symbol of unity between the people of this land and their way of life, assuring sustainable use of the wood, mushrooms and toadstools, acorns… So, people love him and he’s a symbol for them.
