The Generation Tree

Species: Beech (Fagus sylvatica)
Age: 35 years years
Region: Ballina, Co. Tipperary, Ireland

"I planted this beech tree from a seed in 1980. It is a generation tree. The initials of my 12 grandchildren and their year of birth were etched on its bark from 1996 to 2010. The letters continue to expand annually and remain permanent while the tree is alive. It is not alone because it stands in a grove of mixed conifers and broadleaves containing all the native Irish species in what the grandchildren call the “Deep Dark Wood” where they have spent many happy hours at play over the years."
